Every month at EMED Group we shine a light on some of the incredible people across the business who have shown exceptional judgement, calm under pressure, or just plain good sense in the moment.

In February, many of our colleagues – particularly those on the frontline – found themselves in emotionally charged, unexpected or highly pressurised situations. And each time, they stepped up with professionalism and compassion.

These nominations are a reminder that, whether behind the wheel, on the phones, out in the community or in the office, our people are never ‘just doing the job’ – they’re often changing lives in the process.

Our February Shining Stars have demonstrated outstanding commitment, from CPR in car parks to suicide prevention on bridges, from behind-the-scenes data work to epic cross-country journeys – our teams showed bravery, kindness and a cool head when it mattered most. Here are their inspiring stories:

Olivia Tolman & Chloe Dooley – Patient Care, Wellington, Somerset

Nominated by: Adam Rimmell

Olivia and Chloe had just completed a patient drop-off at a care home when they were asked to help staff with an unresponsive resident. They immediately began CPR and did everything they could to help until paramedics arrived. A deeply difficult situation, handled with grace, skill and a steady hand.

Darren Hughes & Phil Harvey – Patient Care, Worcester

Nominated by: Fay Downes

While returning to their vehicle outside Kidderminster Hospital, Darren and Phil were approached by a distressed member of the public. Her partner had collapsed in the car. The pair jumped into action, carried out CPR, and were later told by hospital staff that their quick response helped save a life. Their actions were nothing short of heroic.

Alec Foster & Steve Newick – Patient Care, Evercreech

Nominated by: Simon Pedrick

After transporting a patient home for end-of-life care, Alec and Steve sadly witnessed the individual pass away in the vehicle. They handled the moment with calm professionalism, offering dignity and kindness throughout. The care home manager personally called to praise them – they were, in her words, “brilliant, in a very difficult situation”.

Ruben Hewetson, Kelly Norman & Jayne Bowman – Safe Care, Carlisle

Nominated by: Stuart Fletcher

Originally due to complete just half of a long-distance journey, this trio didn’t hesitate when asked to take on the entire cross-country trip after another crew called in sick. It meant a 15-hour shift – but they did it with compassion, commitment and care for the patient’s experience.

Chloe Murphy & Valerie Renn – Patient Care, Swindon

Nominated by: Diane Curphey

Flagged down by the public at the scene of a serious car crash, Chloe and Valerie took control. Valerie assisted in giving CPR while Chloe supported the other passengers. After giving statements to the police and dealing with what was a traumatic incident, they returned to hospital and quietly continued their shift. Remarkable resilience.

Madeleine Moore – Head Office

Nominated by: Gemma Maxwell

Faced with a major last-minute data request to support the mobilisation in Sussex, Maddie gave up her Sunday and rescheduled leave to make sure the figures were ready for ICB discussions. Her actions helped protect the service’s operational delivery and financial sustainability – all without being asked. A true team player.

Brian Hastie – Patient Care, Redditch

Nominated by: Louise Lewis and Fay Downes

Brian was nominated twice in February for his response to two extremely serious mental health incidents. In both cases, he spotted individuals at risk of suicide and took immediate action to get them to safety – even putting himself at risk in the process. His bravery and calm communication were nothing short of lifesaving.

Kevin Thomson – Courier Services, Hull

Nominated by: Sharon Lawes

A valued EMED team member, Kevin was praised for his commitment to excellent service and attention to detail. Most recently, he tracked down a missing set of medical notes by visiting several post rooms and hand-delivering them to the recipient. A quiet success story, but one that made a big difference.

At EMED Group, we’re proud to recognise colleagues who show quick thinking, courage and commitment to the people around them. February brought some incredibly challenging moments – and these individuals rose to meet them.

To everyone nominated, thank you. You are what makes EMED the business that it is.

On being recognised as Shining Stars, individuals receive a gift voucher and a Shining Star certificate to commemorate their outstanding achievements. Additionally, all award recipients will be invited to a special annual event dedicated to celebrating their successes.
