January Shining Stars 🌟

January is often one of the most challenging months of the year. Dark mornings, long nights and sustained pressure across services. Even so, our people continue to show extraordinary care, professionalism and commitment every single day.

This month’s Shining Stars highlight the very best of EMED – colleagues who went above and beyond for patients, supported one another under pressure and lived our values when it mattered most. We are proud to share their stories…

Mike Coleman, Shrewsbury – calm leadership in a difficult situation

While transporting a patient home overnight, an ambulance became stranded on a narrow single-track rural lane after slipping into deep mud. During a long reverse manoeuvre, the vehicle became immobilised, creating a challenging and potentially stressful situation for all involved.

Mike Coleman attended as part of the second crew and immediately took control. He calmly supported the original crew, transferred the patient into his own ambulance and ensured they were taken home safely and made comfortable. He then returned the original crew back to base, allowing them to finish their shift safely.

The following morning, the patient’s wife took the time to specifically praise Mike, describing him as amazing, caring and highly professional. She highlighted how calm and reassuring he was, and how confident she felt that her husband was being looked after properly. With help from a local farmer, the stranded ambulance was later recovered with no damage.

Mike demonstrated true collaboration, agility and reliability throughout and is a very deserving Shining Star.

Nicky Page, Great Yarmouth – improving patient experience through team work

After joining the team, Nicky Page took on the challenge of helping to modernise the Patient Experience call line, supporting the Central Ops Management team with minimal training and a steep learning curve.

Despite this, Nicky approached the task with enthusiasm and professionalism, quickly building her knowledge and working collaboratively with colleagues and management. She played a key role in improving call handling processes and ensuring the service ran smoothly throughout a period of change.

Nicky’s adaptability, teamwork and commitment to doing the best for patients make her a shining example of excellent call handling and patient-focused care.

Paula Lower and Julie Whitney, Hailsham – creating Christmas magic for a young patient

On Christmas Day, Paula Lower and Julie Whitney went out of their way to make a very special difference for a two-year-old boy who was being taken home to spend a few precious hours with his family.

Understanding how important the day was, the crew decorated the ambulance with Christmas decorations, bringing smiles not only to the child but to his family as well. Their thoughtful actions helped transform what could have been an anxious day into a joyful and memorable experience.

Paula and Julie’s kindness, compassion and attention to the human side of care perfectly reflect the values we hold at EMED.

Jamie Burton, Hull – consistently helpful and respected by patients and colleagues

Jamie Burton was nominated for being consistently helpful, reliable and respectful throughout his day-to-day work. He regularly steps in to help with extra tasks, offers his support wherever needed and represents EMED in an extremely positive light.

Jamie’s professionalism has not gone unnoticed. He received direct praise from a customer who highlighted how accommodating and understanding he is, often going out of his way to help theatre staff and avoid unnecessary issues. His approach has made a real difference to those he works with and the patients he serves.

Jamie is a valued colleague whose attitude and work ethic make a lasting impact.

Mike Peet, Hereford – going above and beyond, even after his shift ends

On two separate occasions this month, Hereford AFA Mike Peet finished his shift at 4pm, only to return later in the evening to help colleagues in need. At around 9pm, he assisted with rescuing both a stuck vehicle and a separate breakdown.

Without Mike’s willingness to help outside of his working hours, the team would have been left short of vehicles the following day and the business would have incurred additional recovery costs. His commitment saved time, money and ensured services could continue as planned.

Mike’s dedication and reliability are a credit to him and to EMED.

Adriana Wojtecka and Timothy Emburey, Farnborough – determination, compassion and teamwork under pressure

Adriana Wojtecka and Timothy Emburey demonstrated exceptional professionalism after being caught in a four-hour traffic standstill while en route to a patient. Despite the delay and frustration such a situation can cause, they remained calm and solution-focused, maintaining clear communication with colleagues and leadership throughout.

Once the traffic cleared, they continued straight to the patient and later volunteered to work beyond their scheduled finish time to ensure a delayed renal patient could still get home safely.

On another occasion, they stepped in to assist a patient after a previous crew had declined the job. With short notice, they arranged specialist equipment, attended the hospital and ultimately safely carried the patient into her home, preventing an unnecessary overnight stay.

Their actions were formally praised by hospital staff, who highlighted the professionalism and compassion they showed throughout. Adriana and Tim are true examples of EMED’s CARE values in action.

Maddie Moore, Head Office – reliability and leadership behind the scenes

Much of Maddie Moore’s outstanding contribution happens behind the scenes, but her impact on the business is significant. Over recent months, Maddie has supported complex bid processes while also remodelling operational solutions for challenging contracts.

She consistently delivers against tight deadlines, keeps stakeholders informed and willingly goes above and beyond when additional input is needed. Despite the demanding nature of scenario modelling and solution design work, Maddie remains positive, engaged and proactive.

Her reliability, leadership and empowered approach have made her a highly valued and trusted member of the team.
