Our volunteers play a vital role in helping patients reach their NHS appointments safely and comfortably. In this new filmed series, we’re sharing their stories – what inspires them, what they love about volunteering and the difference they make every day. We start with Derek…

At EMED, we’re incredibly fortunate to work alongside a community of volunteers who use their time, their cars and their compassion to support patients travelling to vital NHS appointments. Each volunteer has their own reasons for stepping forward and each story deserves to be told.

Over the past few weeks, our team has been out filming some of these remarkable people. Their warmth, honesty and humility shine through in every conversation. This new series gives us the chance to celebrate them properly and to share the impact they make, one journey at a time.

Why volunteers matter so much

For many patients, getting to and from hospital or clinic appointments can be a real challenge. Volunteer drivers help bridge that gap. By offering a friendly face, a steady arm and a safe journey, they make treatment accessible and ease anxieties along the way.

Our volunteers support patients receiving NHS care, working closely with local teams to ensure no journey is missed and no patient feels alone.

Starting with Derek

The first story in our series features Derek, whose quiet reliability and gentle sense of care set the tone for everything volunteering represents.

Derek’s reasons for joining us are simple but deeply meaningful: he wanted to give something back, meet people and make a difference close to home. His kindness is effortless. His motivation is humble. And his impact is felt long after each journey ends.

Derek’s Story.

What’s next

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing more stories from volunteers across our regions. Each one brings something unique – different backgrounds, different motivations, but the same shared heart.

We hope these films will show just how special our volunteer community is, and inspire others to consider joining us.
