The Workforce Race Equality Standard (WRES) helps organisations understand the experiences of colleagues from different ethnic backgrounds and identify opportunities to improve fairness, inclusion and opportunity.

By listening, learning and acting on feedback, we can create a more inclusive workplace and ensure all colleagues have the opportunity to succeed.

What is WRES?

The Workforce Race Equality Standard (WRES) is an NHS initiative designed to help organisations measure and improve race equality within their workforce.

The Standard uses a range of workforce indicators to help organisations understand whether colleagues from ethnic minority backgrounds experience the workplace differently and identify areas where improvements may be needed.

WRES supports greater transparency, accountability and continuous improvement.

Listening to our colleagues
Understanding the experiences of colleagues is essential to creating positive change. We use a range of feedback mechanisms, engagement activities and workforce information to help us understand colleague experiences and identify opportunities for improvement. By listening to colleagues and acting on what we learn, we can continue to build a workplace where everyone feels supported and included.

Supporting equality and inclusion
WRES forms part of our wider Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (ED&I) approach. Alongside initiatives focused on accessibility, wellbeing, engagement and inclusion, WRES helps us better understand how we can create a workplace where everyone feels they belong.
Reporting and transparency
We are committed to transparency and continuous improvement. Information relating to our Workforce Race Equality Standard activity and reporting will be published here as appropriate.

Why is WRES important?

A diverse workforce brings different perspectives, experiences and ideas that help organisations grow and improve.

WRES helps organisations understand:
• Recruitment and career progression experiences
• Representation across different roles and levels
• Experiences of bullying, harassment or discrimination
• Access to opportunities and development
• Colleague engagement and wellbeing
• Confidence in speaking up and being heard

Understanding these experiences helps organisations create more inclusive workplaces where everyone can contribute and succeed.

EMED is committed to fostering a culture where:
• Everyone is treated fairly and with respect
• Opportunities are open and accessible to all
• Diverse perspectives are welcomed and valued
• Colleagues feel safe to speak up
• Discrimination, bullying and harassment are not tolerated
• Inclusion is embedded throughout our organisation

We recognise that creating an inclusive culture is an ongoing journey and requires continuous learning, reflection and improvement.

Reports and Resources

Our ambition is to create a workplace where every colleague feels respected, valued and empowered to achieve their full potential.
