Every day, thousands of patients across England rely on non‑emergency transport to help them attend vital healthcare appointments. At EMED Patient Care, we’re proud to play a key role in that journey – working in partnership with the NHS to provide safe, reliable and compassionate non‑emergency patient transport services (NEPTS).
What is NEPTS?
Non‑Emergency Patient Transport Services, or NEPTS for short, is a free NHS‑funded service for patients who are unable to travel to or from healthcare appointments on their own due to a medical or mobility need. Unlike a taxi or private car hire, NEPTS is a limited resource designed specifically for those with clinical needs that prevent them from using other forms of transport.
Each year, NEPTS helps millions of people reach hospitals, clinics and other NHS settings, ensuring they can access essential treatment and care.
Who is it for?
To qualify for NEPTS, patients must meet the National NHS Eligibility Criteria, which includes:
• A medical condition that prevents safe travel by public or private transport
• A risk of harm or deterioration if travelling in any other way
• A need for specialist support during the journey, such as oxygen or clinical monitoring
Short‑term eligibility may also apply – for example, following surgery, injury or during intensive treatment schedules.
Eligibility is based on medical need, not financial situation. The criteria are set nationally by the NHS and apply consistently across England.
EMED crews are committed to making each journey as safe and comfortable as possible. From managing mobility equipment to supporting complex medical needs, the focus is always on care, dignity and respect.
Behind the Scenes
Providing NEPTS requires huge amounts of daily coordination. New journeys are often added at short notice, schedules shift due to changing appointment times, and traffic conditions can create last‑minute challenges. EMED’s dedicated teams work hard behind the scenes to keep everything moving – keeping patients informed and supported along the way.
We understand that things don’t always go to plan, but we’re committed to delivering the best service possible. A little patience goes a long way, and we’re always grateful for the kindness shown to our crews and call centre colleagues.
What if a patient isn’t eligible?
Not everyone will qualify under the NHS criteria – but there are other options. EMED’s call centre team is always on hand to help by signposting local services, including:
🚗 Community transport
🤝 Volunteer driver schemes
💷 The Healthcare Travel Costs Scheme (HTCS)
These alternatives can make a big difference and ensure no one is left without support.
Before Travelling
Here are a few useful reminders for patients using NEPTS:
- Journeys may be shared with others
- Delays can occur due to traffic or clinic overruns
- It’s a good idea to bring a drink, snack and any medication needed
EMED Patient Care is here to help people access the healthcare they need – safely, with compassion and in partnership with the NHS.
