A few months ago, a member of the public in Lowestoft flagged down a passing EMED ambulance.
An elderly lady at a bus stop had suddenly lost consciousness, falling to the ground and sustaining a minor head wound and a severely broken collarbone. When she came to, the lady (aged 80) was incoherent, very distressed and bewildered.
As the first on the scene, our Ambulance Care Assistants (ACAs) Nicky Haylock (right) and Mark Goodwin (left) took exceptional care of her, despite their shift having already finished and them being en route to base to go home. They were empathetic, calm, efficient and capable.
They accompanied the lady to the A&E department of the James Paget Hospital and helped to organise her care from there. By the time she was booked in and settled, it was some hours after their shift should have ended.
The elderly lady’s mother commented, “We are so truly grateful for them (Nicky and Mark). When an accident like that happens, the impact of the kindness of others – especially strangers! – can’t be measured.
It was a horrible situation, eased so much by their thoughtfulness, empathy and skill. And they were so patient at a time when they really must have simply wanted to go home themselves.”
On behalf of everyone at EMED Group, a huge thank you to Nicky and Mark for going the extra mile!
